Find your balance with my refreshing beams of clarity, like the morning light as the sun rises over a still sea. Your anchor in the natural world. Appearances & Origins

A Silicon Dioxide mineral, ranging in a pallet of greys from pale smoke to a deep, charcoal black, Smokey Quartz is readily found in many parts of the world. The result of ionising radiation, the colour is naturally enhanced and is sometimes found with a pale yellowish tint. In nature, it sometimes forms in combination with other minerals such as Citrine or Amethyst. Due to its commonality, this type of Quartz is easy to obtain and, therefore, quite affordable. To develop that deep, rich colour, it must sit in 50 degree Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) for a long period of time.

The National Gem of Scotland, it dates back to the Celts and Druids, often seen as a sacred stone. Its’ earthy colour symbolised the power of Earth Gods and Goddesses, and was often associated with Hecate (Goddess of the Occult and the Dark Moon). It has been used widely since Ancient times as it is easy to cut and shape. The Egyptians and Romans used Smokey Quartz in their jewellery. As it is believed to protect the holder against bad luck it often was, and still is, used in the making of crucifixes. Therefore, this form of Quartz was once worn or carried by soldiers in battle.

In Feng Shui, Smokey Quartz is associated with the Wood element – the energy of growth, new beginnings, nourishment and health.

Chakras & Placement

Smokey Quartz is a powerful stone to use in crystal healing layouts to activate the Base/Root Chakra and is related to the Hermit card in the Tarot, representing inner workings and spiritual clarity. It helps us to protect and ground our energy whilst bringing in clarity and positivity. Connected to both the Crown and Base Chakra, it assists with the balancing of Yin and Yang energy as well as within the ethereal body, pushing that gentle grounding energy from the Earth up through all the other Chakras – stabilising and bringing peace as it softens negative energy.

The Base Chakra is your 1st Chakra, associated with the Earth and located at the base of your spine. It controls the energy for kinesthetic feeling and moving and helps you to feel rooted in the physical plane whilst you tap into your spiritual energy. Smokey Quartz is rather uplifting and brings about a sense of clarity, removing any lingering negative energy.
